OVERVIEW:The first Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Florida was established at Shands Teaching Hospital in 1967. The current Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Shands Children's Hospital cares for children from birth up to 21 years of age with a variety of medical and surgical problems. The unit treats an average of 1000 patients per year and is the largest of its kind in the state of Florida.
