The fellowship program has developed from a collaboration between the Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses. The program in Gainesville is the first of its kind in the south and has been a major center for teaching and training over the years. More recently, there have been many changes, not only in the practice of pediatric cardiology, but in the training techniques and the research areas that are involved in an academic pediatric cardiology division.

The objective of the program is to train candidates for careers in academic pediatric cardiology. A minimum training period of three years is required for the American Academy of Pediatrics Sub-Board of Pediatric Cardiology. Additional training is available for those undertaking a supported research program.

The basic plan:

  • First-year: mainly clinically oriented with a survey of possible research areas
  • Second year: divided between clinical work with more responsibility, and the beginning of a chosen research project
  • Third year: major emphasis on research but with a continuing clinical responsibility

Candidates must be medical graduates and have finished their PL-3 year.
