Residency Program
The University of Florida Division of Genetics and Metabolism offers a 24-month Clinical Genetics Residency Program in Medical Genetics. The program is a collaboration of four institutions: University of Florida; All Children’s Hospital, Molecular Genetics Clinical Laboratory; Nemours Children’s Clinic, Biochemical Genetics Laboratory; and Department of Health, Bureau of Laboratories. Genetics clinics staffed by the faculty of the UF Pediatric Genetics Division train residents in all aspects of prenatal, pediatric and adult genetics as well as genetic screening and ethics of genetics. Clinical laboratory rotations occur in all of the four institutions (listed above). The two year program insures that the resident attains the skills and credentials necessary to become Board Eligible in Clinical Medical Genetics and successfully attains Board certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics.
Residents have ample opportunities to obtain diverse clinical experiences and participate in clinical or basic research. They also have didactic teaching in the basic and clinical sciences pertinent to medical genetics, including Mendelian genetics, cytogenetics, inborn errors of metabolism, molecular diagnosis, syndrome identification and dysmorphology, teratology, reproductive genetics, congenital malformations, multifactorial disorders, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, genetic screening, social and ethical issues in medical genetics, genetic counseling, and quantitative human genetics.
Residents are given the opportunity to improve their clinical or basic research skills by extending the program for one or two years after the completion of their mandatory training. Considering the heavy investment in genetics research at the University of Florida, we expect to graduate research-oriented clinical geneticists.
