Fellowship Board Review Course/Core Lecture Series

Education of the Neonatology fellows is of utmost importance at the University of Florida. Therefore, a structured formal lecture series has been created to not only prepare the fellow for their Neonatal/Perinatal Board Examination, but to also provide the fellow with a comprehensive review of Neonatology. The course is designed so that entering fellows will be able to cover every subject area over their three year time span.

The course is broken down into sections. Each section may last from 1-4 months, depending on the complexity of that section. Lectures will be provided by faculty members of the Neonatology division, fellows, and other pediatric subspecialists. Each section will start with a pre-test to prepare the fellow with board type examination questions. The fellow is expected to review the assigned reading prior to the lecture for that week. At the end of each section, a post-test is provided with feedback to assure that the fellow has absorbed the material and to discover what areas need strengthening.

At the end of the three-year course, a final mock board-type examination is provided to assist the fellow with preparation for their examination. In addition, the fellow is expected to take the in-service Neonatal/Perinatal Examination each year provided by the AAP at one of the provided national testing centers. Strengths and weaknesses will be assessed with each examination so that the fellow understands what areas to concentrate their review efforts on. Fellows are expected to attend each lecture which will take place on every Thursday, from 1:30 – 3:00pm in the Neonatology Conference Room. Fellows are expected to create approximately 3-5 lectures over their fellowship training. A current version of the course syllabus with the listing of suggested reading materials is provided (Neonatology Board Examination Seminar Series).
