Chairman's Message

Richard Lee Bucciarelli, M.D. Our Department of Pediatrics seeks to capitalize our unique position on the major research campus of the University of Florida here in Gainesville to offer comprehensive training in pediatrics from over 110 outstanding faculty members comprising the full range of subspecialty and general pediatrics. The quality and diversity of the faculty creates a very well balanced experience in our pediatric residency program, offering a superb entry point either into the practice of pediatrics or into further subspecialty training and an academic career.

I consider our faculty to be our most crucial resource in accomplishing our three-fold mission of education, patient care, and research. One benchmark of the quality of our faculty is the department's ranking 24th in the nation in NIH funding among Pediatrics departments at public universities. Our faculty members also consistently rank at or near the top of our medical school in overall teaching evaluations and in special Exemplary Teacher awards. Innovative teaching programs, such as our on-line Morning Report, our resident-run Morbidity and Mortality/Quality Improvement conference, and our Bench-to-Bedside Seminar, serve to daily reinvigorate the quality of teaching. We believe all members of the Pediatric team should be trained as teachers and participate in a program focused on residents as teachers, teaching other residents, medical students, and yes, even faculty.

The clinical effort of our department is also quite balanced between inpatient and outpatient, as well as between tertiary care referrals and "bread and butter" cases. Our outpatient clinic sites and Shands Children’s Hospital, along with our dedicated staff, provide a family-friendly environment where family-centered care is key.
