Director's Message
We are thrilled that you are considering the University of Florida for your Pediatric Residency Training.
The University of Florida in Gainesville has a strong, balanced program in general and subspecialty pediatrics. Our training in general pediatrics includes an active continuity clinic program, acute care and community pediatric experiences, and emergency room training, in addition to rotations in Adolescent Medicine, Developmental Pediatrics, the Newborn Nursery and a month dedicated to Advocacy training. The inpatient service is composed of three ward teams: Blue, Orange and the Hematology/Oncology Green service. General pediatric patients are admitted to both "Blue" and "Orange" teams. General pediatricians attend on the wards as well as supervise in the various clinics.
We have a vital hospitalist program complimenting the generalists on the wards. Each ward team also has subspecialty patients; therefore, you interact with subspecialty attendings on a daily basis. Our intensive care units are very busy and offer a state-of-the-art training opportunity. Neonatologists (NICU) and pediatric critical care medicine physicians (PICU) staff them. The curriculum also provides you with ample elective time to "tailor" your experience to meet your personal goals.
We are especially proud of our Pediatric Housestaff who are trained and encouraged to critically evaluate clinical problems and to function as primary care physicians. The training program helps you, the young physician, to develop a personal responsibility for life long learning, enthusiasm and excitement about the care of infants, children and adolescents. Our residents perform well on the American Board of Pediatrics certification exam. After pediatric training, approximately 47.0% enter private practice while the remainder pursue subspecialty fellowship training.
The housestaff fringe benefit package is excellent and includes comprehensive health and disability insurance, paid vacations and extra time off over the Christmas or New Year holiday. The opportunity for flexible training is available. The Department provides an educational allowance and time for residents to attend one national meeting of their choice during the second or third year of training. Your educational allowance may also fund book, journals, and other educational expenses.
Gainesville, the home of the University of Florida, is a great place to live. Many nice residential areas are in close proximity to the Shands Children's Hospital at the University of Florida.
Thanks again for your interest in our program. We look forward to receiving your application. Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. We will participate in ERAS for the upcoming July 1 positions. Please note that you are required to register for the National Resident Matching Program.
Another important contact person is our Training Program Assistant, Imogene Seeger. Her email is seegeiw@peds.ufl.edu.
