Observerships & Externships
Externships
Externships are formal one-month rotations in Pediatrics for 4th year medical students. These are also called "away electives." Externships are offered through our College of Medicine. We only consider externships for applicants who are in their 4th-year of a U.S. medical school. https://medcat.medinfo.ufl.edu/catview.php
Observerships
Observerships allow an individual trained formally in medicine to "shadow" a physician in the department for a designated period of time. Such an experience provides clinical exposure (but not training), as well as the opportunity for faculty members to get to know an individual. However, "observers" are not allowed to interview, examine, or otherwise provide care for patients. The time structure and duration of an observership can be quite flexible, and depends upon the agreement between the applicant and his/her host physician(s). There are requirements and an application process for an observership. These include:
- Enrollment in or completion of a graduate-level medical degree program in one's home country.
- Completion of UF HIPPA training - Privacy and Security for Visitors and Vendors
- Agreement by one or more faculty members of the department to host the applicant for a designated period of time.
We believe that UF is an exciting place to practice Pediatrics and enjoy sharing our opportunities with a diverse group of medical professionals.
